Pre-existing Conditions & Rate Categories

For Emergency Medical Insurance, a pre-existing condition is covered only if it was stable during the required period before your effective date. The required period depends on your Rate Category:

Rate CategoryEligibilityStability Required
A Ages 59 and younger (no medical questionnaire), OR age 60+ who answered "No" to all medical questionnaire questions (standard health profile) 3 months before effective date
B Age 60+ with more complex health profile based on medical questionnaire answers 6 months before effective date
C Age 60+ with highest-risk health profile based on medical questionnaire answers 6 months before effective date

For Trip Cancellation & Interruption Insurance, a pre-existing condition is excluded if it was not stable in the 3 months before the purchase or application date.

Rate Category A is guaranteed issue for travellers under age 60 — no medical questionnaire required. Travellers age 60+ complete a medical questionnaire to determine their Rate Category and applicable stability period.

Do I need a medical questionnaire?
Travellers under age 60 are guaranteed issue at Rate Category A — no medical questionnaire required. Travellers age 60 and over must complete a medical questionnaire which determines their Rate Category (A, B, or C), affecting the stability period and the premium rate. Youth plans are restricted to applicants under age 30 with their own eligibility rules.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Yes — stable pre-existing conditions are covered. Rate Category A (under 60, or 60+ with standard health profile) requires 3 months of stability. Rate Categories B and C (60+ with more complex health profiles) require 6 months of stability. For Trip Cancellation & Interruption, the 3-month stability rule applies counting back from the purchase or application date.
Who qualifies for the Youth plans?
The Youth plans are for travellers who are at least 30 days of age and under age 30, living in Canada, and covered under a Canadian government health insurance plan (GHIP) for the entire trip. Youth All-Inclusive covers trips up to 365 days; Youth Deluxe covers trips up to 30 days with higher coverage limits and includes chaperone coverage.
What is the Non-medical Inclusive plan?
Designed for travellers who already have separate emergency medical coverage. It includes Trip Cancellation, unlimited Trip Interruption, Misconnection & travel disruption ($2,700), Accommodations & meals ($350/day, max $3,500), Default Supplier Protection, Flight Accident ($100,000), Travel Accident ($50,000), and Baggage Loss/Damage ($1,500) and Delay ($500). Family coverage available for travellers under age 60.
Is there a discount for travel within Canada?
Yes. The Single-Trip Emergency Medical plan offers a Travel Canada discount for travel outside your home province but within Canada. This discount cannot be combined with an optional deductible.
What happens if I forget to call Manulife Travel Assistance first?
For Emergency Medical plans, failure to contact the Assistance Centre before seeking treatment results in a 25% co-payment on the covered claim costs. The requirement is waived only if your medical condition made it impossible to call — in which case, someone else must notify the Assistance Centre as soon as possible.
Can I extend or top up my coverage?
Yes. Single-trip plans allow top-ups before the policy expires if no claim has been made. Multi-trip plans can also be topped up for individual trips that exceed your selected maximum trip duration. Top-ups must be purchased before the original plan expires.
